Wallace Berman’s Underground Film Screening - DEC 3RD

If you read every word the Beats ever wrote and fantasized about being one of the guys in the overtly sexist yet seductive On the Road, or imagined what it would have been like to be part of the Laurel Canyon ’60s crowd, making revolutionary rock music with the likes of Frank Zappa, then you’ll be taken in by this nostalgic showing of short films made by a group of actors and artists who first screened their underground work in Topanga Canyon amidst groups of bohemians. At the helm of the group sat former Beat movement member Wallace Berman, whose mystic artistic concepts informed by such teachings as the Kabbalah influenced the films being shown. Those include 1971’s The Last Movie, which was written and directed by Dennis Hopper, who also makes a brief appearance in the film. Other films being shown include Russ Tamblyn’s Rio Reel (1968) and First Film (1966). Tamblyn will also (most likely) be making an appearance at the screening. Berman would surely have joined him, had he not passed too soon in the mid-’70s by way of a drunk driver.
